Every pet parentās worst nightmare is their beloved furry (or feathered, or scaly) friend going missing. Sadly, it happens more often than you might think ā but the good news is, thereās a lot we can do to prevent it.
July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month, a time to double-check our safety measures and give our pets the best chance of staying safe and being reunited if they ever get lost.
šŖ It Happens in a Secondā¦
A gate was accidentally left open. A loud noise that sends your dog bolting. A curious cat slips out the door. Even the most careful pet owners have had near misses or heartbreaking losses.
But with a few simple steps, you can dramatically reduce the chances of your pet going missing ā and increase the chances of them coming home if they do.
š¶š± Top Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe and Found
1. Microchip Your Pet ā and Keep It Updated
A microchip is a tiny implant, about the size of a grain of rice, placed under your petās skin. It contains a unique ID number linked to your contact details in a national database.
ā”ļø Important:Ā Microchips only work if your details are correct! If youāve moved or changed phone numbers, make sure you update your petās microchip records.

2. ID Tags Are Still Essential
Even with a microchip, visible ID tags are the fastest way for someone to help your pet get home.
Make sure tags are easy to read
Include your phone number (and reward offer, if you like)
Check that collars fit snugly but comfortably
3. Secure Your Property
Regularly inspect fences, gates, and windows for escape routes. Even small gaps can be tempting for adventurous pets.

4. Leashes and Harnesses Matter
A well-fitted harness and leash prevent unexpected escapes during walks or outings. Never rely on training alone ā even the best-behaved pet can panic or chase something unexpectedly.
5. Have a Recent Photo of Your Pet
In case they do go missing, having clear, recent photos makes it much easier to create posters and online alerts.
