The African Horse Sickness vaccine is a two-component, live attenuated polyvalent vaccine that protects against the serotypes of the AHS virus (AHSV) circulating in the region. It's administered by a registered veterinarian in two separate doses, three weeks apart, during the low-risk season (June to October) to achieve full immunity. Annual vaccination is mandatory in AHS-controlled areas to prevent the spread of the disease, which is transmitted by midges.
