Plan ahead

Make sure you have everything you need before picking up your puppy.

We have a free downloadable list here to keep n hand when doing your shopping.

Puppy-proof your home

Puppies are very curious and like to explore, so it is important to make sure your home is safe for them. Block off some areas you don't want the new puppy to have access to and store away things that can cause harm to your puppy like:

  • Store away hazardous items such as cleaning products, medications, and chemicals out of reach, like in cabinets that can lock or high on shelves.

  • Cover electrical cords with cord covers or tape as puppies like to chew on anything they can get their little paws on

  • Remove small items that your puppy can choke on, such as small toys, jewelry, and coins

  • Secure trash can lids to prevent them from getting into the bin and eating things they shouldn't be ingesting

  • Block of stairs and balconies with baby gates or barriers to prevent accidents

Remember to supervise your puppy at all times, especially in the first few weeks.

Prepare for the expenses

Owning any animal can become expensive, and puppies are no different. Between the cost of food, Vet visits, and supplies, it is important to budget. To stay within budget shop our pet ranges here.

Consider pet insurance to help cover unexpected expenses.

Most dog breeds come with their own health problems, so make sure you are prepared if / when it comes to that.

Set up space for the puppy

Having a playpen or crate can make your puppy feel safe. Take a few things into consideration as you set up this space.

  • Location, choose a place where your dog will feel safe an secure. It should be easy to supervise and away from danger

  • The size of the area will depend on the available space and the breed you have. Make sure it is large enough for him/her to have enough room to move comfortably.

  • The type of playpen you choose will depend on your needs. Look at a few options before buying. Sep up as per the manufacturer's instructions, and make sure it is secure and stable

  • Add training pads to the bottom to make cleanup easier, and can help prevent staining if the pen is set up on a carpet or hard wood floors.

  • Start adding bedding and toys. Choose a bed that your puppy can easily get into to make it inviting. Puppies have a lot of energy and to keep them stimulated, add lots of toys. Picking a variety will help them get used to many textures and types of toys.

Take it slow

Your pupy will be nervous when you first bring him home. If you are picking up your puppy far away, make frequent stops to allow for potty brakes and to give the puppy a change t stretch their legs.

Introduce your puppy to their new home

Start by showing them where the crate is as well as food and water bowls, and toys.

Let them expore theri surroundings a bit while keeping a vigilant eye.

You can introduce members of the family.

If you have other animals in the house, it would be benificial to inlist the help of a dog trainier or behaviourist to help with introductions and prevent possible fighting, or your puppy becoming to scared.

Establish a routine

Dogs thrive on routine and it is important to start a daily routin as soon as possible.

Their routine should include things like regular feeding times, potty brakes, exercise and playtime.

It is also benifical to have set bed times in their routine to make sure everyone gets a good nights rest.

Start with basic training as soon as you can and always reinvorse good behaviour.

Good luck, you've got this!
