It can be so frustrating when your dog won't stop scratching and is losing hair, and you have tried all the remedies you can think of, but nothing seems to be helping.
When a pet starts losing hair in a few places, usually around the face and bum, and won't stop scratching, it can be an indicator of skin mites.
Mange comes from an overgrowth of mites that burrows into the hair follicles causing itching, wounds, and hair loss. Mites cannot be seen by the human eye which makes them difficult to diagnose, your local vet will send skin scrapings to the lab to confirm a mite infestation.
Skin mites are an important part of the skin microbiome and are something we and our animals have on our skin. For the health and well-being of our animals, we use topical or oral tick and flea treatments throughout most of the year. These products also help control the mite population.
During the winter months ticks and fleas are mostly dormant and most people stop giving their dogs and cats their tick and flea treatment, this means there is nothing to control the mites and they can take over, causing hair loss and crusty-looking wounds that don't go away, no matter how many times you clean it, or put antibacterial ointment on.
In order to successfully get mange under control you need to use a mange-specific treatment before continuing on with their regular tick and flea treatments. Depending on the type of mange your dog or cat has, treatment procedure and duration will vary.
Your vet will be able to assist in verifying which type of mites your pet has.
Treatment can include medicated baths, topical treatments and oral medication.
If caught early enough 1 or 2 treatments should get our pet looking their best self again, but in more severe cases treatment can take up to a few months.
Most tick and flea dips are not designed to fight mites and can cause irritation of the damaged skin.
Look for tick and flea products that specifically target mites in over-the-counter medication.
